Belkin Introduces WeMo Enabled Crock-Pot Slow Cooker

By Stephen | Gadgets

Here at Write-Click Media, there are two universal truths:Belkin WeMo Crock Pot

  • We love our gadgets!
  • We love to eat!

So when we heard that Belkin was combining the very best of those truths (No, not edible gadgets… maybe someday!) we were naturally excited!  Introducing the WeMo-enabled Crock-Pot slow cooker.  Not content to simply set it and forget it, Belkin has now provided slow cooker chefs with the ability to control the slow cooker’s temperature settings from anywhere, directly from their iPhone WeMo app. Yup!  This guy has built-in wifi which gives you remote control through the app… from the basement couch or your office across town!  Imagine being the envy of your co-workers when you casually take out your iPhone and turn the slow cooker on.  Dinner’s at 5!

And just in case you’re not familiar with Belkin’s WeMo technology, they’re all about the “connected home”.  Turn your lights or appliances on/off through the wireless app… from anywhere on the planet!  That’s right.  We’re one step closer to never having to physically do anything.  Now if we could just have an app clean the dirty dishes.

Self Control app: When You Need a Little Helping Hand

By Stephen | Apps , Productivity

selfcontrol

I bet that everyone can relate to this.  You sit down at the computer intending to get something productive done.  After a few minutes you think maybe you’ll glance at your Facebook page to see if there’s anything new there.  Maybe there’s another cat video on Youtube.  Have you checked the news today?  Off to CNN you go.  It’s never ending.

The next thing you know, several hours have gone by and you’ve barely made a dent in whatever it was that you wanted to accomplish in the first place!  You’ve fallen victim to the endless distraction that is the Internet.

Well, if you’re a Mac user I’ve got a huge productivity goldmine for you!  It’s called Self Control, and it’s a free app to help you block websites that suck your time away, and focus on the task at hand.

After downloading the SelfControlApp you can create whitelists or blacklists based on websites that you know are going to be a problem.  Then set a timer, and get to work.  The websites are blocked until the timer runs out, regardless of you closing the app, or even rebooting your computer!

Of course Self Control is only as good as you allow it to be.  If you’re not honest with it, there’s nothing stopping you from wasting your time.  But if you take a few minutes to craft a proper blacklist (this is my approach) then you can be assured that you are far less likely to get lost in that vacuum of distraction.  And as we all know, Time is the one resource that is absolutely finite.  We can not create more of it.  We can only do more with what we have.

Give SelfContol a try and let me know how you make out!

WordPress Themes – Easy Customization for Anyone!

By Stephen | Blogging

One of the best things about WordPress is the ability to completely customize the look and feel of your site!  If you already know how to work with HTML or CSS stylesheets, great!  If you’re like me and don’t have the slightest clue what that means, not a problem!  There are thousands of quality ready-made free and premium themes available to customize your WordPress site.  At present count there are 2,320 free WordPress themes in the theme directory.  I imagine that most casual bloggers can easily find a theme that works with their needs.  Money

If you’re running a business site you might be interested in using a premium theme. The advantage of a premium theme is that it is guaranteed to be stable, and you have access to customer support in the event of any problems.  If you’re working with a free theme, you might be able to send its author an email but you can’t count on a timely response.  With a premium theme you have access to online support, and maybe even a contact number.  If your WordPress site is critical to your business, don’t take the chance with a free theme.  They’re fantastic for most personal projects, but when there’s money on the line, a premium theme from a reputable provider is the only way to go.

I feel that these deserve their own dedicated post, but in the good ole days there were two premium WordPress themes that reigned supreme:

In my next post I will go into premium WordPress themes in more detail.

WordPress – A Solid Foundation

By Stephen | Blogging

When I started my first blog, WhatAboutStephen, there weren’t many choices when it came to blogging platforms.  Most people seemed to be using Blogger, but Typepad and LiveJournal were also names that I had heard being thrown around.  Each one had certain characteristics that set it apart from the others.  For me it was Blogger’s ease of use that initially caught my attention.   Because I was already a Gmail user, I could start a blog within minutes and begin sharing my thoughts with the world.

As I became a little more blog-savvy, I realized that I was quickly outgrowing all that Blogger could offer me.  While it was great for the beginner, Blogger lacked some serious functionality.  If I was going to run an online business, I would require something far more robust.  It was time to join the big leagues.

WordPress is now the de facto standard for serious (and not-so-serious) bloggers.  Its reliability is second to none, and it continues to boast a large and active user-base.  Chances are excellent that if you’re in need of a plugin to customize your WordPress site, it probably already exists.

There’s a lot more that I could say about WordPress, and I’m sure that it will become a recurring theme on this blog.  The two are inextricably linked.  Without WordPress, there really is no Write-Click Media.

New Beginnings

By Stephen | General

New-BeginningIt’s been a long time coming, but the Write-Click Media blog is finally born!  It’s my intention to publish a weekly posting covering a wide range of topics, from Internet tips and tricks (because who doesn’t need one more blog to tell them how to use Chrome?), to industry trends, to some self-reflective musings… perhaps even all in the same post!

So please sit back,  strap yourself in, and enjoy the ride!
